Island Race Series Carpooling
Anyone wishing to carpool to out of town races can meet at the Helmcken Road park-and-ride lot. All out of town races start at 11:00, so departure times are suggested so that arrival at the race is approximately 10:00 to allow time for a coffee along the way and a warm-up jog before the race. If you are planning to carpool to the race, and plan to leave at a different time, let wabbit know how many seats are available and I can post in the Digest if you are looking to fill a vehicle. Also, don’t forget www.pickuppal.com as another option.
[ March 22, Comox Valley Half Marathon - 07:30 departure
[ April 5, Merville 15k - 07:00 departure
[ April 19, Sooke River 10k & Series Awards - 09:15 departure

TWC Cycling News
14 March 2009
Multicolouredmushrooms meandered in Metchosin meadows as I drove by on Saturday morning; golf addicts getting their fix in the rain.
Regrets had been coming in all week "Sorry, have to work this weekend", "Sorry, going shopping", "Sorry, on holiday" etc., so thelikelihoodof a big turnout was slim. Besides, the weather forecast was quite grim. However, if weather forecasts dictate all outdoor activities in Victoria most people would stay home and vegetate.
It was barely sprinkling when Ken, Evan and I set off for the usual run to wain Road, but by the time we had gone about 10 km it stopped. After a brief stop at the confessional at Tulista Park (Ye olde English f's and s's look the same), where my sins were those of emission, the golden orb began to seep through the high overcast. We had a brief stop at the Long-eared Owl tree at Tatlow, but the owls were not at home, and then pushed on to East Saanich Road. Ken and I stopped to remove excess clothing at Lowe Road (it was sunny and hot by then) while Evan pressed on. Ken took off first and, because of a recalcitrant zipper, I was somewhat delayed. What happened thereafter became a comedy of errors. Suffice it to say that I got caught up in the Oak Bay pack, who were riding single file and took forever to pass me. Instead of turning up East Saanich, Evan carried on to Bourne Tce. Ken stopped and tried to signal to me but I was so mixed up with the Oak Bay pack at that point that I missed him and pushed on hard trying to catch the two of them, who I assumed were just ahead. Frustratingly, there was no sign of them at Mt. Newton X Rd., only the Oak Bay pack who had stopped to regroup, and I hammered all the way home, finding it hard to believe that I couldn't catch them. I know that I'm slow, but THAT slow? When I arrived back at Francelli's Ken's bike was not in his car. How was that possible? I changed and just as I was about to drive out to see if I could find them they showed up. We had a good laugh about what had happened. So much for being the cycling coordinator, when I can't keep track of two riders and so much for leading from the rear. Perhaps I should try some of those mushrooms next week; they might make me go faster.
Saturday rides will continue, meeting at Francelli's Coffee Shop in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre at 9:00 am.
