Bazan Bay Congratulations

Congratulations to TWC on a very successful Bazan Bay race.Despite switching to Daylight Savings Time, an early startand a cold snap, we had over 600 finishers. Even Simon Whitfield made it to the race. We have received numerous compliments. "Thank you" to all our volunteers. From our revenue we were able to make $500 donations to Hospice Victoria, the Alzheimer’s Society of Victoria, and the Peninsula Track Club. We will also continue to sponsor the Victoria Youth Triathlon.

Bazan Bay 2010 News

Exciting news for 2010. Dale Carter has stepped forward to volunteer as race director for the Bazan Bay 2010 Race. We are tentatively looking at March 14th, 2010, as our date.

Island Race Series Carpooling

Anyone wishing to carpool to out of town races can meet at the Helmcken Road park-and-ride lot. All out of town races start at 11:00, so departure times are suggested so that arrival at the race is approximately 10:00 to allow time for a coffee along the way and a warm-up jog before the race. If you are planning to carpool to the race, and plan to leave at a different time, let wabbit know how many seats are available and I can post in the Digest if you are looking to fill a vehicle. Also, don’t forget www.pickuppal.com as another option.

TWC Cycling News

Saturday, 7 March 2009.

As icy blasts battered the old log house its timbers creaked and groaned in protest .... waking me from a fitful, dream-filled sleep. Panic! Was my anchor dragging? Staggering from my bunk to the nearest porthole reality slowly seeped into my befuddled brain. The neighbours' boat was still securely anchored where it had been last night. The neighbours' boat ??? .... house.

Let's start again. Black clouds roiled and boiled overhead at 6:30 am. and snow was forecast. Did I really want to lead a bike ride today? The temptation was huge to slip back under the duvet and return to the land of nod. But "what timorous wee mouse is this that is feart o' wind and weather"? As the Scottish bard may have said, had he contemplated my dilemma. I'm not a West Coast Wuss, I'm from Team West Coast and I can handle it!

Remarkably, by the time the first cup of coffee had reached my belly, some blue sky appeared and all seemed well with the world again.

Eight riders, including one guest, headed out at 9 am sharp, on the reverse Wain Road route, including the Goward and Tatlow variations. A westerly wind was problematic in some places and around the airport it was quite gusty. Pat Bay was full of white horses and two small float planes wobbled hesitatingly into the air as we had a short break. A third plane bounced wildly in the chop before turning back to the dock to unload its passengers. They were likely relieved to be back on terra firma, and being out in my sailboat in that wind was the furthest thing from my mind.

Gusty cross winds buffeted us as we headed north and I was happy to tuck in behind the group and be pulled along. We turned onto Tatlow, rather going up to Land's End, and perhaps it was fortuitous that we did. Our thoughts are with the Oak Bay group, with whom we usually cross tracks, and who were injured at about the same time that we would have been riding along Land's End Road, had we gone that way. Was my (angry?) call for the group to turn up Tatlow rather than carry on a premonition? We will never know. 'Shrimp Happen' as they say, but that day we were spared.

It was a hard slog back to Francelli'sand I was glad of the rest and warmth. Returning to Metchosin, the Juan de Fuca was covered in white-caps. At this point, however, I was more concerned about my own creaky timbers than I was about those of the old log house. A shower, Ibuprophen and a nap seemed to solve that problem, and I should be good to go again next week.

Saturday rides will continue, meeting at Francelli's Coffee Shop in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre at 9:00 am.
