2009 Ht0 Open Water Swim for MS
I have again taken on the challenge of raising money for the MS Society of Canada by registering to participate in the 2009 HtO Open Water Swim for MS, at Thetis Lake on July 26, 2009 and raising funds for MS.
I am asking you to join me in support of a very good cause by making a donation. Any amount, no matter how small, will help me to reach my fundraising target $800). The money raised is used to support programs and services for people living with MS on Southern Vancouver Island, and for MS research initiatives across Canada. It is very easy to make a donation online:
1. Go to this link: http://www.mssociety.ca/en/events/online-misc.htm
2. Choose “Pledge a Participant”
3. Enter my name: Janet Hawkins
4. Once my name pops up, click “Pledge Me” and it will take you to my donation page.
On behalf of myself and the MS Society of Canada, I would like to thank you in advance for your generosity.

TWC Cycling News
What started out as a great ride on Saturday with an excellent turnout and sunshine ended on a sour note. One of our guest riders, Martine, was involved in an accident just before the Royal Oak Shopping Centre and only a hundred meters from home. A mini-van passed her and then turned right almost immediately and without signaling. Her front wheel hit the van and Martine hit the deck as she had nowhere else to go. The ambulance and police were on the scene in short order. To cut a long story short, the good news is that, apart from some significant bruising and being thoroughly shaken, up Martine is OK and hopes to come out with us again soon.
The New Balance Half and Sprint at Elk Lake on Sunday so I'll not be out on Saturday. Have fun and stay safe.
Saturday rides will continue, meeting at Francelli's Coffee Shop in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre at 9:00 am.
If anyone is interested in a ride on Saturday morning of about 2 hrs duration or 40 km please contact Rosemary at: rosehen@shaw.ca
Please contact Bob if you wish to participate on Wednesday evening rides so that he has some idea who is going to show up. bwooff@telus.net

Electronic Gate at Observatory Hill
Yesterday I was informed that Cyclists training on the hill were holding the electronic gate open by blocking the sensor eye. Apparently this has occurred on other occasions. Tampering with our equipment is not an acceptable practice and must cease immediately. This activity will not be tolerated. This gate is in place for security purposes. Although pedestrians and cyclists can circumvent it and we have a security guard on site, the intent is to inform the general public that the hill is closed and to keep any non NRC vehicular traffic from accessing the site during non-business hours.
As previously stated we are pleased to welcome cycling enthusiasts to our site, but we do so at our discretion. Failure to abide by this request could result in termination of the use of Observatory Hill for training purposes.
I hope we can count on you to inform your ridership and to assist with policing those who may impact your current access to this site.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance.

Do it for Dad Run
The prostate centre is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides unbiased and understandable medical information and support to men and their families on prostate cancer and prostate health issues. Last year, the run welcomed 565 participants and raised raise over $105,000 for research and education.
We invite you to join us as a Team in this year’s Safeway Father’s Day Walk/Run for Prostate Cancer on Sunday, June 21, 2009. We are with you every step of the way – with Team Captain materials, support from our Committee and ongoing information and assistance through emails and phone calls. The support that the Safeway Father’s Day Walk/Run for Prostate Cancer (Do it for Dad Run) receives from Teams is a vital part of our event. Teams account for the bulk of participants and donations. All you need to do is to recruit 8 friends, family members, co-workers, or neighbours then be prepared to run, walk or stroll your way across the finish line. We have 2 routes to choose from - an 8km Walk/Run or a 3km Family Fun Walk, so runners and walkers of all levels can participate!
The majority of the money raised from the Safeway Father’s Day Walk/Run for Prostate Cancer (Do It For Dad) stays on Vancouver Island to help The Prostate Centre fund prostate cancer research and help promote prostate health awareness. Please contact Gaynor Jackson at 250 474-1467 with any questions and to receive information or materials. We look forward to working with you.
