IM Coeur d’Alene

Coeur d’Alene is a beautiful setting for an Ironman venue. It has a pristine lake, wooded hills and adequate accommodation. All three events are 2 loop courses. The swim is 2 loops with a short run in between on the beach. The water averages 17° C but can be colder.

The bike and the run pass by the finish line and transition area four times, so spectators are in for a great day. The bike course is more challenging than it initially would appear. It has a very hilly section of about 25 to 30 km about half way through the loop. Although the hills are not onerous, they do wear you down, especially on the second loop. The course is very technical, with lots of right angle turns. There are also people cheering you all along the bike course with bands, music and costumes. There was even a biker gang trying to give out beer!

The run is 2 loops with a short out and back, and a longer out and back. There is one hill at the turnaround on the longer out and back. The water stations are well spaced and did not run out of supplies (as most other IM do by the time I come by!)

This year, there were strong winds all day. The swim had 1 to 2 foot waves in close to shore and 2 to 3 foot waves at the turn buoys. The water was about 17° C. The wind strengthened throughout the day and was in your face on the way into town. It started to rain at the beginning of the run and continued throughout. The temperature was in the low 60’s on the bike and high 50’s on the run. The wind-chill was a much lower temperature on the run.

For myself, my swim was brutally slow, mainly due to waves and the 2200 other swimmers hitting me! Three people in my age group did not finish the swim.

My bike was slow also, partially due to an “extended” flat! However, I was the fastest in my Age Group on the run. I had my usual leisurely transition times (About 20 minutes total). However, I did finish 2nd in my age group. I didn’t feel bad, since the first guy was 35 minutes ahead of me and had qualified 4 out of the last 5 years for Hawaii. I also was 37 minutes ahead of the 3rd place finisher. All in all an okay day.

I think this is one of my favourite IM courses. The course is challenging but doable and the fan support is great. The aid stations are well equipped and volunteers helpful even during the pouring rain. I would recommend this race to anyone. Interestingly, I think there were only 2 people from Victoria in the race.
