The Vancouver Triathlon
The Vancouver triathlon was great - awesome venue!! But, I don't think I will attend the "free lectures" anymore - at the Victoria Half Iron they showed us how to fix flats - I had a flat tire right out of transition. At Vancouver they talked about how to have a great swim.
The day started off well. I got to transition on time and got my site all set up.I even had time to help out some "newbies". It was a beautiful warm morning; the ocean was flat with no current. I had a wonderful warm-up. Then it went to pot.
A big boy hit me in the face at the beginning of the swim filling my goggles full of water. I had to swim to the side, blind, as the salt water really hurt, to empty my goggles. I really wanted to get a better time on the swim so swam like heck. I got around the first buoy without issue. Then I found myself swimming alone - no bubbles to follow. I began to site on the yellow buoy about 350 meters away. I swam and swam. The buoy was not getting closer, but the huge ship half way to the west shore was getting very big!! I stopped and had a look around. It was then I realized I was following a kayaker with a yellow volunteer shirt on. As I was swimming out, he was keeping ahead of me. I turned around and realized I was about 200 meters off my line.Bloody Hell! My first lap was 27 minutes!! Plus I swam an extra swack of distance. Lesson Learned! So much for my great swim time.
Once I got on my bike, I was much happier. I was very worried about my back as I strained it lifting heavy bags of dirt a couple of days before. It held out, though. It was a great bike - no really steep hills, but one moderate one that we went up and down 4 times. Up was OK, but down was really fun!! Weeeeeee!!
The run was very nice - through a park and along the water. I got a bit too hot and leaked out all my salt - but I made it! Kilometre 17 seems to be my magic number - I bonk! I did pass 2 people on the last 3k - I found a pace and refused to alter it. I must alter my training, though, so I can get past that kilometre 17 mark and still feel OK. 3 lousy kilometres. Seriously!
All round, it was a good experience. Nice people, lots of lessons learned and lots of really nice bikes to look at.
Ihope everyone that went to Osoyoos did well. I know a few people went, eh? I hope it wasn't too hot. Good practise for Penticton. Off I go - way too much to do.Have a great day

Hi there, I'm hoping you guys can help me. I'm a slacking off triathlete who only cycles these days. I'd really like to do the Sri Chinmoy/Self Transcendence Tri in August but I need a swimmer and/or runner to compete. Do you mind putting the call out to the club? Thanks

TWC Cycling News
Considering that it is the height of summer there was a good turnout on Saturday. It includedLinda and Mike, just back from holiday in Oregon,Linda Dobbieand two new members Michael and Heather. The previous weekTom had mentioned that he wouldn't be riding with the group this Saturday because he was going to test the waters at Elk Lake first before doing the Sri bike course. This prompted me to arrange the ride from Francelli's this Saturday to include the Sri course, connecting with it via Royal Oak, Lochside and Sayward.
Bob set off first with the fast group and I followed with the slower group, which included the two new people, an injured Wayne and Valerie. Thereafter followed a comedy of errors best explained over a couple of beers some time. The net result was that I caught up with Wayne, just as he was turning round near Brentwood, we passed Valerie, who had taken a shortcut along Oldfield, we passed Tom who was going in the opposite direction along West Saanich with a whole entourage (harem?) of female riders, regrouped briefly with Bob et al. at Pat Bay, and Avila, who had arrived at Francelli's late and after the fast group had gone, didn't catch up with anyone. Not sure what the two new members thought of all of this but they stuck with me for the rest of the ride and seemed to enjoy the company and coffee back at Francelli's.
Even though some riders are doing the Hurricane Ridge ride with Kevin this Saturday there will be the usual Saturday ride meeting at Francelli's Coffee Shop in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre at 9:00 am.
If anyone is interested in a ride on Saturday morning of about 2 hrs duration or 40 km please contact Rosemary at: rosehen@shaw.ca
The Wednesday evening group rides continue to leave at 6pm - also from Francelli's. Send me an email bwooff@telus.net if you're thinking of joining us and keep in mind that if it's raining I'm more likely to stay at home.
