Digest submissions for February

I am taking a holiday in Mexico from February 16-25 to attend my daughter’s wedding. Next week it’s business as usual, but for the February 19th edition of Digest, please send your submissions to Pam and John Milnes at: dasani2@telus.net. For the February 26th edition, send them to wabbit@shaw.ca, but CC Pam and John just in the off chance that I encounter flight delays or cancellations returning from Mexico on the 25th. Gracias amigos.

Sunday March 8, 2009 Bazan Bay,Part Deux

Also known as “I’ll be back until you sign up to volunteer”

Team West Coast Needs you, its members, to help out twice a year at theBazan Bay 5km and the Victoria Youth Triathlon. In return you are able to swim, bike, run, walk, drink, eat and sleep (okay, okay maybe the sleep part is an exaggeration).

Ø Did you know funds raised at Bazan Bay go towards the Youth Triathlon, a break even event put on by TWC for the youth of BC?

Ø Did you know that a portion of the funds are donated to various charitable groups?

Ø Did you know the remainder helps support numerous club activities (you will have to wait for thePart III to find out which ones)?

We are on track to make this year’s Bazan Bay 5km another great success. A number of TWC members and their spouseshave stepped forward to volunteerbut we still need more. You can help out:

Ø a week before the race with flyer distribution

Ø race day pre race set up

Ø race marshalling

Ø kitchen/hall support

Ø post race tear down

Ø Saturday (7th)race pick upat Frontrunners

Ø race day registration

NCCP report

Recently Sean Cunningham and I attended a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) workshop for Adult Community Coaching put on by Tri BC.

What did we attend?

Until recently Tri BC and Triathlon Canada had used a ‘certificate’ based learning program structure. I.e. you attend a course and you are certified. One of the problems identified was that merely attending a course gave a person certification regardless of whether they learned anything on the course and certainly regardless of whether they have applied any of their learning. Tri BC has now implemented a ‘certification’ program. What we attended was a workshop that now gives us the ability to register for a certified program.

What did we learn?

The course was mainly focused on us sharing our knowledge amongst the island based triathlon coaches. Having said that the following are some of the areas that were taught:

A) Risk Management – This covered areas such as Environmental, Equipment, Facility and Human Risks (Some examples are checking the bike over just prior to a ride (e.g. confirm that the quick release on the bike hasn’t worked it’s way loose in transporting the bike to the start of the workout), When practicing open water swimming, make sure the weaker swimmers are comfortable being somewhat isolated as the swim gets further into the lake)

B) Making Ethical Decisions – This is based on four fundamental principles: i) Respect for Participants, ii) Coaching Responsibly, iii) Maintaining Integrity in Relationships and iv) Honouring Sport

C) Training and Planning Concepts – Identified the four general characteristics as to why people participate in sport (and hence training). These are:

a. Social,

b. Success,

c. Self-Direction and

d. Sensation (Some examples are during a warm-down of a run workout, run (slowly) backwards. This would give a different sensation, as well as social (a.k.a fun) achievement)

D) Training and Planning Concepts – This covered thinking of a training plan from a seasonal perspective down to an individual week and workout session.

E) Technical Skills Foundations – This covered the principles of order in terms of correcting an athlete’s style in a sport. One should correct Safety, (i.e. Awareness and Base (Foundation)) followed by Core (i.e. Stability and Postural Control) then Coordination (i.e. The combination of more than one moving part at a time) and finally Component (i.e. Mechanics)

Should you have any specific questions give me or Sean a shout via e-mail.

A Big Thank-you to TWC

For your awesome support for the Investors Group “Walk For Memories” held January 25’09 @ UVIC Centennial Stadium! It was a grand success, both in raising money & community awareness re: Dementia. Island Race Series Carpooling

Anyone wishing to carpool to out of town races can meet at the Helmcken Road park-and-ride lot. All out of town races start at 11:00, so departure times are suggested so that arrival at the race is approximately 10:00 to allow time for a coffee along the way and a warm-up jog before the race. If you are planning to carpool to the race, and plan to leave at a different time, let wabbit know how many seats are available and I can post in the Digest if you are looking to fill a vehicle. Also, don’t forget www.pickuppal.com as another option.

TWC Cycling News

There was a good showing for the ride last Saturday; thirteen in all, comprising nine in the main pack and four in the slower group underSteve's good guidance. The sun brought out both Karen and Tony who had been away the previous week under clouds in Florida. However, Tony was energized after bringing back three GOLD medals from the Masters World Badminton Championships in Miami. Way to Go Tony. The main pack did the regular Wain Road route, lead at a moderate pace by Wayne, Tom and Tony. The middlewas held by Chuck, Karen, Matt and Kevin and Sue and I brought up the rear as usual. Apparently there was somejockeyingfor position on the way back along West Saanich Road but I decided to miss the action this time. The only item of interest on the ride was Tom's effort to get a head start on Valentine's Day by offering to buy Sue a bagel and coffee on the way home. One of Steve's group came unstuck on some ice on Lochside Drive (Goose?) and went down hard. We've all done that at one time or another so don't feel too badly. We hope that the bruises fade quickly and that you'll be out with us next week.

Saturday rides will continue, meeting at Francelli's Coffee Shop in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre at 9:00 am.
