TWC Cycling News
Response to the narrative of Saturday Morning Rides in the Digest has been generally positive. However, one rider commented that the last one was so long that he didn't read it. So, for those with a short attention span, I thought that I'd accommodate them by writing a short abstract. In the world of science an 'abstract' represents a concise summary of the important results and conclusions of an investigation. A somewhat longer narrative will then follow.
Saturday Morning Ride: 29 November, 2009
Abstract
Nine riders (two female and seven male), each having a different level of ability, rode from Francelli's to various points North on a grey, misty day. Five riders returned to Francelli's within 15 minutes of each other and four dispersed to the winds on the way home. The average speed of the riders and distance covered was strongly correlated to their abilities and was independent of gender and both make and model of bicycle used. Ingestion of Smarties either before or during the ride had no effect on the outcome. The level of confidence of these findings is very close to zero.
General Narrative
It was great to see so many riders show up for last Saturday's ride, considering that it was a very grey day and the roads were wet. The riders included three newcomers; Mark, a friend of Karen's, Brian who generally rides with Oak Bay and Valerie, Bob Wooff's wife.
I was feeling lazy so decided to ride to Sidney, but some of the others wanted a longer ride. We headed out along the usual route (under the tunnel and out along Royal Oak) and I played sheepdog at the rear. From this vantage point I was able to witness an amazing scene which played out for a few seconds at the intersection of Royal Oak and Lochside Drive as riders milled around trying to decide whether to turn left or continue on. Motorists must have thought that they were seeing a cloud of giant fireflies as most riders were equipped with "Bob's Blinkies" in one form or another so all these lights were flashing on and off and weaving all over the road. Certainly these lights may have prevented an accident and the motorists behind mealmostcame to a halt until the cloud resolved itself into two distinct groups which went in different directions.
My group of four had an easy ride right up to McDonalds and then into Sidney where we hooked up briefly with the other group at Tulitsa Park. From there I think that Wayne and Tom did Wain Road and the others hammered up to Lands End. Dan went off to check out the young crowd at a trendy cafe in Sidney while Valerie and I ambled back the way we had come and had a very relaxing ride. There was method for my laziness; I wanted to save some energy for dancing at the fabulous TWC Christmas Party that night. Congratulations to Dan and the group who organized this event. It was awesome!!!!!
Back at Francelli's talk turned to other rides which we might do. These included:
- A Christmas ride on the December 20th when Santa might appear (any volunteers to be Santa's elves?).
- A fun ride to check out the bakeries and or cafes in Sidney.
- A ride starting and finishing at either Juan de Fuca Rec. Centre or in Sidney.
Pay attention to the TWC Digest for details!
For the moment Saturday rides will continue, meeting at Francelli's Coffee Shop in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre at 9:00 am. Again we plan to have a fast group and a slower group. I intend to ride at the pace of the slowest in the second group so you shouldn’t feel intimidated by being part of this slower group. If you have any questions about the rides please do not hesitate to contact me.
